A Few Words from Richard Wedler...

It seems as though we just finished the 2012 show season, but here we are again ready to begin another tour. We'll be starting in Covington, KY with Popular Woodworking's Woodworking in America in mid-October. Old friend Steve Shanesy called last Spring and asked if I'd be game to put together a presentation on "Precision Routing" for this year's show and I accepted the invitation.

It's been a particularly busy summer with us completing our 2013 catalog (now 50 pages and with a separate rate card), working on new video content for our overview DVD, keeping up with a steady flow of Micro Fence order fulfillment and building several woodworking commissions to boot. You'll see a few snapshots of the projects in our Spotlight section below.

I'm looking forward to a busy and productive show season this year, with The Woodworking Shows new management embarking on it's second season...and this one with more preparation time than last. Everyone was pleasantly surprised last year with the progressive and co-operative tenor of the shows under new owner Bryce Beerman. His management turned the "downward spiral" of the show's direction around through added free education and his communication skills with both attendees and vendors alike.

I'll be carrying over the new "Precision Routing" theme to my seminars at the shows to expand our previous "Inlays" topic that I've presented for the last two years. Hopefully it will offer far more technique to router enthusiasts and leave an overview of Micro Fence's versatility beyond the category of inlays...I don't know how many times I've heard potential customers say "I don't think I'd do enough inlaying to justify..." Knowing how much versatility the tools can bring to the shop, it's always a bit frustrating to hear. Hopefully the new seminar content will open a few more eyes.

Here's to a particularly successful and enjoyable year for all of us.

What's New at Micro Fence

Recent Micro Fence Recognition

The Micro Plunge Base and Dynaglide were both nominees for the 2013 Visionary Awards (formerly the Sequoia Awards), at the 2013 AWFS Show in Las Vegas. Our Micro Plunge reached the Finalist round this year. Two years ago our original Plunge Base (the larger one we make) won the Sequoia Award for "Leadership in Product Innovation-Power Tool Category."

DynaGlide has been our dry-lube choice at Micro Fence for over 15 years when we're assembling our tools.  Recently improved with an added rust inhibitor, it virtually eliminates coefficients of drag on either wood or metal.

New Overview DVD Coming Soon

We have been hard at work composing the revised DVD for the Micro Fence system. It is one of the bigger projects due to its extensive scope. New footage had to be included as well as some re-shoots of the original material. The DVD is coming along well and it should be available in the next couple of months.

Gallery Spotlight on Richard Wedler Cabinetry

Early last Spring I got a call from a client that I worked with about thirty years ago. In the eighties and nineties I built about a dozen pieces for their home in West Los Angeles that included a bedroom suite, built-in office, library, dining room buffet, master bath linen press and a motorized TV lift. Walking into their home again was like visiting old friends.

A retired talent agent executive at the William Morris Agency, the husband had become a voracious reader (two-three novels a week). His wife needed more shelf space to accommodate the growing stacks of books. In the late eighties, I had done a built-in at one end of the pool room...this seemed like the logical spot to add to the shelving. They requested a painted finish to match the walls and trim in the room, so the cases were made of paint-grade alder and divided into four units. A top bonnet and continuous baseboard tied the unit together without seams. As you'll see, the original unit had a white limestone counter which we picked up in the new unit by using limestone tiles on the top of the lower unit under the window.

The second commission of the summer season came from the same client...a valet dresser for the couple's walk-in closet. They had a picture in a catalog of a larger chest that appealed to them, so the project included scaling it down to fit the space where it would be placed. The small curved and tapered feet were accomplished with bandsaw and our Plunge Base fitted with a bearing-guided fluting bit that my dad and I made about 35 years ago.

The most fun project of the summer came from a friend who's been asking me to build a dining table for about 5 years. He had purchased a set of six dining chairs that appealed to him and wanted a walnut table to complement them. We borrowed the curvature of the chair legs and designed what you see below. The top was 6/4 black walnut, the legs from 12/4. I got to use the Micro Fence Ellipse Jig during the lay-out and templating process.

1.The ends of the table top apron were constructed from 1/8" bending poplar, skinned on both sides with walnut, and glued up on a shop-made form. Here they're being glued to the legs using a web clamp. 2.The apron components and legs were joined with mortise and loose-tenon joints. Our Plunge Base proved invaluable for executing these. Walnut glue blocks were added for reinforcement to support the substantial top assembly.  (see below).
3.The tabletop was under-cut with a 22 1/2° bevel and a 1/4" bottom cap added a design element to the apron. 4.The free-standing apron and leg assembly is fastened to the tabletop with steel brackets that purchase on the apron in a 1/16" slot. This method allows the tabletop to expand and contract with little resistance. (Our Plunge Base again, this time fitted with a slotting cutter).
5.The apron and leg assembly was made as a separate unit to facilitate cartage into the client's apartment.
6. The assembled table on the bench, ready for a tung oil finish.

Show Schedule

It looks like its going to be a busy end-of-year for Rich as he will be attending the following shows in the coming months. He'll be presenting a new seminar with a wider scope, covering inlays, architectural detailing, joinery and precision routing techniques to help you use your Micro Fence equipment more efficiently. Join him at any of the following shows. We intend to participate in all the shows after the 1st of the year as well. Check our site for the most current information.
