A Few Words From Richard Wedler

It's become a very busy summer season here at Micro Fence. We're extremely happy to announce the arrival of some new products as well as grateful to have two wonderful woodworking commissions on the furniture-building front.

Here in this newsletter, you'll see our newest accessories, the Light Rings now available for our Plunge Bases. After a long research and development period, we finally found all the elements we needed and took our plunge into the world of electronics, (little did I know about Gerber files, printed circuit board technology or for that matter how these were made). See more on the story below.

In other Micro Fence news, I'm also proud to announce our return to Highland Hardware, (we were in their catalog years ago, but through personnel changes and challenging economic times were discontinued). Highland's grasp of internet marketing and penchant for high quality tools has convinced me that this is a good move.

Meanwhile, a client from forty years ago (that I worked for last summer), returned to fill up the woodshop's schedule and keep our woodworking chops up to snuff. The commission is for two walnut pieces in the same style that I designed last summer for their Buddha Cabinet (shown below in the Woodworker's Spotlight). The new commission is for one automated TV lift cabinet (for a 65" flat-screen), and a complementary art folio storage cabinet. Both are terrific mortise and tenon exercises. We'll show the results in an upcoming newsletter.

On the recreational side of things, our long-lived Woodshop Band returned to the recording studio to record another disc. We've been carrying on this tradition for 36 years now, and continue to meet every 2 or 3 weeks to spend an evening enjoying the rich experience of playing music together...over the last few years we've recorded some of it. You can have an earful on our 'Music for the Shop' page if you like.

Meanwhile, in this election year I count us fortunate to be as busy as we are...it distracts us from the craziness of our country's politics? May the dust settle with some values intact. Enough said.

Seeing is Believing!

Last year we were informed that the LED lights that we've used for the last ten years were being discontinued by the manufacturer. We've tried to find a suitable replacement to no avail, though we're continuing our search for a suitable battery-powered light. By a stroke of timely luck, we came across what appeared be a solution to our problem. In our last newsletter, we wrote about Frank Garcia in New Jersey and his new innovation in our "Tips and Techniques" section. He had built a ring of LED lights that fit onto our plunge base and provided a shadow-less work area. We loved the idea so much that we asked Frank if he'd be interested in participating in the development of these new accessories with us.

Over the last few months, working from initial drawings that Frank drew up in his CAD program, he found a printed circuit board engineering firm in New Jersey to develop the Gerber files (needed to manufacture the boards). After a few changes and alterations, we found a manufacturer in Anaheim, Ca. that could supply our custom shapes and offer the quality we needed at a tolerable price, (it was a shock to learn about electronics prices!). At any rate, we've completed the first run of these little gems and we're very proud of the results. Personally, I've never seen such beautiful lighting on any woodworking tool...ever.

Each of our Plunge Bases can be fitted with a printed circuit board light source that virtually eliminates shadows.

Both models include 12V transformer, 10' extension cable, velcro circles for attachment, wire ties and everything you'll need to install.

The Micro Plunge Base Light Ring

The Plunge Base Light Ring

Clear, brilliant light builds confidence and eliminates errors.

In addition, we recently started to carry a new item from True Position Tools, the Cabinet Light Puck Installation Jig

It makes the installation of most "puck" style lighting extremely easy.

Tips and Techniques

Our customers have sent us pictures of solutions they've come up with using our Micro Stop (the measuring mechanism of the Micro Fence) to add fine adjustment in a variety of applications. The first is from customer Duke Graham who added the Micro Stop to his Grizzly sliding table saw fence.

I Love this setup,, It works great and is VERY accurate. Thanks Rich!!!

The saw table is a Grizzly G0623X 10 inch slider. I can dial this in with my calipers and follow the dial and BAM!!! Right on target. Thanks again for such a wonderful product that really works.

These photos were sent to us by our customer Glen Blanchard who has installed it on his crosscut sled to micro-adjust length of cut. He fabricated a hinged mechanism to turn the adjustable Micro Stop into a flip stop.

These are photos sent to us by our customer, Peter Howell. He says" Attached are photos of the line and berry jewelry box I made using a Bosch Colt router, the Microfence plunge base and small circle cutting attachment. The box is about 18” long, 12” wide and 6” tall and is made of Walnut. The lines are made of holly and the berries are cherry, maple and padauk. The design was drawn onto the lid and the centers of each circle or arc where marked. Small holes were drilled at each center and used as the pivot point when using the small circle cutting jig. A five blade pinwheel is very difficult to layout. Most people make only four blades and that is what is suggested for all but the most experienced woodworkers. The arcs are cut using a 3/64” diameter spiral router bit and the grooves are 1/16” deep. The finish is one coat of Watco clear and four coats of clear Briwax. The holes that were drilled for the pivot pin were filled with a dark brown crayon after completing the finish. They are nearly invisible.
