A Few Words From Richard Wedler

It’s been a remarkably busy season here filled with the usual Micro Fence manufacturing rigors and a resurgence of our furniture-building business.

The first project of the summer was a nine-drawer dresser for my daughter Dara, who has just moved into her first apartment. The request came last Christmas and she’d been waiting patiently for months for my schedule to open up. At the end of April, I did the initial sketches and the project was finally under way.  We decided on six roomy drawers for clothing topped with three more shallow ones for lingerie, jewelry, etc. I had made a beech night stand for her about fifteen years ago that she wanted me to match, so beech was the material and clear lacquer the finish. Click on the pictures to see the finished piece.

I received a call last March from an old, favored client now living in Big Sur, CA who was re-designing her Los Angeles home. She wanted a few new things built as well as a “freshening” of a number of others.  About thirty years ago I had made a wide range of furniture and built-ins for this client and re-entering her home after all these years was like re-acquainting with old friends. At first I thought a number of things looked strangely familiar, but then amusing to realize they were from my own shop.

Amongst the new pieces we’ve made is an oak platform bed to accommodate a 9” thick organic latex mattress. It features 7/8” thick beech slats spaced at 2 ½” intervals over an air plenum which allows the latex to breathe. Under all that are storage drawers on full extension slides. Currently at the finishers, we’ll post some pictures when the piece is completed and installed (maybe in our Winter newsletter).

I’ve heard from a number of our subscribers about the omission of the western leg of the Woodworking show circuit this year. Apparently the numbers from the last two seasons did not support the tour coming cross-country to do the Costa Mesa/Sacramento/Portland/Denver swing. While disappointing to many, I can say from experience that it’s difficult to justify the most expensive form of marketing when sales do not support it. The new owner of the Shows (now three years in), is located in Massachusetts and making the long haul out to the West Coast just seemed outside the budget. We’ll be trying to make up for the absence by emailing special offers to each show location that we would have visited. Stay tuned.

It's not often we've lessened the number of routers we fit with our system, but a few instances of mis-fittings have urged a decision on our part. Starting in January, we'll be eliminating a few names from the list of motors that we can fit in our Plunge Base. The tolerances in the plastic bodies of some of the trimmers we fit are so variant that we'll no longer attempt to make adapters for them. These include the RotoZip and some of the Rigid models.

We recently have started to carry the Whiteside "Ultimate" Flush Trim/Pattern Router Bits. The “Ultimate” Trim Bits are perfect when working with templates or when using a router to flush trim matching wood surfaces. Whiteside’s compression spiral design, along with a ball bearing guide, makes this bit easy to use in the router and produces a superior quality trimmed edge. The “ULTIMATE” Trim series brings industrial engineered bits, previously manufactured for CNC machines, right into your shop. You can choose to buy individual bits or get the Bit Kit that includes all 3. Click on the image to get redirected to the items page on our website.

Tips and Techniques

From time to time we hear from a customer who's come up with an innovation to our products that's suited his/her particular needs. Our customer Frank Garcia, whose work you might have seen before in one of our past newsletters or our galley page (click here for gallery), has sent us a few photos showing what he's done. Having forgotten too many times to turn off the LED lights on his Micro Plunge base and finding his batteries dead, he decided to create a solution. Frank made his own light ring that he can fit onto his base under the motor carriage, eliminating his need for batteries altogether.

Cool solution Frank!
