This sixteen foot diameter bookcase was made of alder and constructed in five sections that bolted together after it was finished and delivered to the jobsite. A custom sofa was built to fit inside it for television viewing in the client’s family room. (Picture taken prior to the room being furnished).

Rectangular ‘blanks’ of alder plywood are cut to their circular forms for identical top, fixed middle shelf and bottom components.

Base moldings and alder edge-banding are glued to the convex curve of each of the five bookcase segments.

The assembled five individual cases are joined to become the 25′ long bookcase. This view shows the reverse-curved final section. The joints between each section are covered by a fluted column.

The assembled bookcase curls around the workbench with the routing jig just before the staining and finishing process. Part of the job was to create a template for the sofa-maker to work from so that the case and couch would nest together properly.

This 25′ cherry bookcase was built as ten individual cases and assembled on-site at St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo, California. The Wallace Neff designed Library was endowed by the Doheny family who stored art treasures on the second floor. By agreement with the Church, the collections would be preserved there until they became property of the Church on the twenty-fifth anniversary of Estelle Doheny’s death. At that time, a Christy’s auction was held to raise money for the buildings’ maintenance and improvement. I was honored to receive the commission for the upstairs Music Salon/Library bookcase. Shortly after this picture was taken, a Steinway grand piano (circa 1929) found it’s home just behind the fore-ground couch.

Three middle cases, 16″ deep bolted together to become the break-front section of the project, then two end cases 12″ deep completed the assembly. The crown and pediment fastened to the top making the overall project about twenty-five feet long and just under 10′ tall at the peak of the pediment. Working at the Seminary was about as close as I could ever imagine to being a Renaissance craftsman commissioned by the Church. During construction and installation we were treated with great consideration and respect.

Hall Table
This a hall table. Its about 7′ long. The woods are burled walnut, and steambent walnut from a huge salvaged urban tree, with ebony details.
The arc on the top, the solid inlay and the edging forms were done with the Micro-fence radius jig. The bending form layers for the steambent walnut was cut with the same radius jig. The bent piece was 2 1/2″ x 4″ x 106″ long.

Richard,
I have to thank you! I just received a check for a commission from a new client in New Hope PA. He had seen my work on your web site (he bought a fence/radius guide) connected a few dots from other pubications and decided to buy some furniture for his home. Your router guide system will play a huge role in executing the various commissions for him! I’ll pass along photos when they are complete.
In the mean-time, here is a hall table made with your tools.
A very appreciative user – Michael .

Philip Derrow: “Several years ago, my wife said she wanted a round table to seat 12 people and I said I’d make it. 99” in diameter and 4 years later it was done.”

I used the Micro Fence trammel system with both pin and vacuum centers to make critical cuts during the process.

Plastic rectangles with pilot holes were temporarily attached to the surface of the veneered table with two-sided tape to provide pivot points for the Circle Jig.

Dry-run set-ups determined where stop blocks would be placed (again with two-sided tape), to insure accurate starting and stopping points. (Later the intersections were finished with a hand held chisel to remove the radius left by the router bit).

To insure accurate pivot point positioning Babbitt utilized one of the Plunge Base LED lights to shine horizontally through the plastic plate. This refracted in the drilled pilot hole, assisting with alignment to the pencil drawn layout.

The outer Macassar Ebony veneer was cut using a band saw to conform to the scallops of the inner White Oak. Each of the twelve segments were glued up individually using yellow glue.

Babbit returned to the plastic pivot points to rout the 1/8” X 1/8” groove for the holly stringing using the Circle Jig & Plunge Base. The stop blocks were once again positioned during a dry run (and illuminated with our LED light), to insure accurate cut stops in the actual cutting operation.
